چکیده

The connective tissue of the pubic symphysis of the female guinea pig undergoes a series of remarkable modifications during the estrus cycle and during pregnancy (1-3). Similar changes can be effected experimentally in the pubic symphysis of the castrated animal by appropriate treatment with steroid hormones and relaxin, making the symphysis especially suitable for investigation of the effects of hormones upon the metabolism of connective tissue. This paper is concerned with the effects of estrogen and relaxin upon the rate of incorporation in vitro of C14-labeled glycine into proteins of symphyseal connective tissue. In addition, the effects of these hormones upon the endogenous oxygen consumption of connective tissue slices have been investigated.

Relaxin and Estrogen Accelerate Growth of Uterine Cervix of Prepubertal Pigs

and Implications One of the primary targets for the biological actions of relaxin is the uterine cervix. The effects of relaxin on this organ include inducing growth and remodeling of connective tissue and cervical cells to accommodate pregnancy and parturition. The related physiological and clinical observations include softening, ripening, and dilating the cervix and facilitating delivery of ...

Relaxin regulation of endometrial structure and function in the rhesus monkey.

Despite the documented importance of the protein hormone relaxin in reproduction in various mammalian species, the role of relaxin in human reproduction is poorly understood, largely because of the lack of studies in women or in suitable non-human primate models. Here we describe the establishment of a non-human primate model of early human pregnancy and its use in defining the actions of relax...

Expansion of specialized epidermis induced by hormonal state and mechanical strain

In mammals, some sites of specialized skin such as the palms, soles, and lips grow proportionally with the animal. However, other types of specialized skin such as the nipple and anal/genital region are dramatically altered with changes of reproductive status. The specific cell types that mediate the growth of these sites have not been identified. In the mouse, we observed a dramatic expansion ...

The effects of relaxin and estrogen deficiency on collagen deposition and hypertrophy of nonreproductive organs.

In this study, we determined the effects of relaxin and estrogen deficiency and estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) on the cardiac, renal, and pulmonary phenotypes of female relaxin gene knockout (Rln1-/-) and age-matched wild-type (Rln1+/+) mice. One-month-old Rln1+/+ and Rln1-/- mice were bilaterally ovariectomized or sham-operated and aged until 9 or 12 months. A subgroup of ovariectomized mi...
